A Higher Power?

Is there something beyond us…a ‘Higher Power’? If so, what sort?

A benevolent parent…guiding, approving, loving?

lovingA whimsical trickster…looking for entertainment?

tricksterA stern master…looking for obedience?

sternAn ambivalent spirit…who created on a whim, then moved on?

ambivalentA celestial champion…testing mankind’s fortitude?

testOr, no ‘Higher Power’ at all…our existence is due to a cosmic roll of the dice?

noneTo answer the question, some say ‘Faith’ is all that’s needed, others say ‘Science’.

I say, “Too many factors, too many unknowns, too much emotion, too much history…”

too muchWe each will choose what we assume is the truth, but in reality, our feeble minds don’t have the capacity to truly answer the question.

So, we build our ‘reality’ around our assumption, and live our lives as best we can.

After all, we’re only human…

  1. I chose all the above except:
    A whimsical trickster…looking for entertainment?
An ambivalent spirit…who created on a whim, then moved on?
Or, no ‘Higher Power’ at all…our existence is due to a cosmic roll of the dice?

With the first one, I have learned through my studies of the Bible that God does have a sense of humor.

As far as the ambivalent spirit, that sounds a lot like the one who “deceived them (and) was (will be) cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever”.

No Higher Power….now that a tough one. Since I work at a National Laboratory, though I’m only a draftsman, the Laws of Thermodynamics come into play. Based on this very fundamental law of physics, where you can’t get more energy out of a system than you put into it, I asked one of the physicist on the BaBar Project at SLAC where the energy for the Big Bang (which is just a theory) came from? He looked and me and thought for a moment and said “we don’t know”. Suddenly the whole theory falls apart based on physics. The energy powering our universe had to come from somewhere…

Thanks for the mental exercise!!! Have a fantastic weekend!!!

    • The way I figure it, we each see the “Cosmos” from our own small (make that microscopic) perspective and we each have a view of what created “us”…and I take my hat off to those that are pretty sure about all of it. I personally know that I don’t know enough to be sure, but I have high hopes…
      …enjoy your weekend!
