Solitude

I watch in silence
Time passes, the world I know changes
I remember the dark, moist water’s edge
Pulsing with life, full of opportunity
When we were seldom hungry, never lonely

No more

Now I am alone
Others of my kind are gone
The abundance of prey is only a memory
Where once the waters meandered
And the canopy was lush
Now there is only long, dark roadways
Full of rushing, noisy machines
Who never pause
Never see

I watch in silence

The Florida panther is almost gone.  They estimate that there are only 100-160 breeding adult panthers left.*  Soon, this graceful, beautiful creature will be only a memory – something we find in Wikipedia, or maybe we can google about, but never see in reality.

Our world is losing one of the most graceful, noble creatures.
